Fortnightly Budget: 26 Pays Do Not Divide Into 12 Months

Envelope budgeting assumes the money arrives on the same rhythm as the bills. In Australia it does not: pay lands every fortnight while bills land monthly, quarterly or yearly, and 26 does not divide into 12. Put your bills in at whatever rhythm they actually arrive and this converts each one to a per-fortnight figure. It also puts a number on the mismatch: setting aside half a monthly bill each fortnight is 24 slices a year against 26 pays, which over-collects by exactly one month of bills. That is the two extra pays everyone feels but nobody can quantify.

Accounting & Finance

Australian households and casual or contract workers paid fortnightly who are trying to make a monthly budget line up with a fortnightly pay cycle.

How it works

  1. Name a bill, for example "Rent".
  2. Enter how much it is and how often it actually arrives.
  3. Enter your take-home pay per fortnight.
  4. Add the rest of your bills, then read the per-fortnight figure and what is left over.

What you gain

  • Converts every bill to what it actually costs per fortnight and shows the extra month of bills that a monthly-based budget quietly misses across a 26-pay year.

  5. Add each bill with its name, amount, and how often it arrives (weekly, fortnightly, monthly, quarterly, yearly).
